ironbridge angling society the ironbridge angling society welcome to our new website ironbridge angling society (ias) promotes and supports angling in the ironbridge gorge. you can find out more about us by clicking here . the ias website is a one-stop-shop packed with information on angling in one of the uk's most prestigious and picturesque places: the ironbridge gorge, telford. if you're new to angling you will be able to find out about licensing, fishing for £10 and how to join ias. existing members can share photos of their catches and chat to other society members in the forum. the ironbridge area of the river severn is recognised as being one of the finest places to catch barbel, chub, pike and roach in the united kingdom. ironbridge has become very popular with anglers from outside of the area who like to bring their families to the gorge because of its unique combination of first-class fishing, excellent accommodation and historical interest, thanks to the gorge's status as a world heritage site and the birthplace of the industrial revolution. just for that reason we have provided a large selection of the best places to eat, drink and stay in ironbridge gorge as well as the many tourist attractions in our visit the gorge section. we hope that this website will assist all of you wishing to experience angling in the ironbridge gorge and to help you really achieve the utmost from your visit. latest news ias river report. 31st aug 2015 it's been a great start to the fishing season so far this year on the river severn here in the ironbridge gorge. with mostly normal summer waterlevels & plenty of weed growth, there's an abundance of young silver fish showing & also plenty of decent barbel & chub. this bank holiday weekend has brought some rain, but today, (monday), waterlevels are still only indicating 0.62 metres above normal summer level on the environment agency marker post beside the museum of the gorge on the wharfage. the river itself is running quite coloured though, with a fresh influx from the vyrnwy catchment area giving it a pronounced peaty red tint. fishing hotspot so far this season has definately been the old wharf wall adjacent to the museum of the gorge, with local angler phil wilson taking four fish from there over the 10lb mark since 16th june!! phil has taken all his fish on that traditional favourite, luncheon meat, & prefers to ledger a piece the size of a small brick whenever he can!! very well done phil, we're proud of you!! ias river report. 28th jun 2015 with this spell of lovely early summer weather, & the new river fishing season just opened, now is a perfect time to pay a visit to the ironbridge gorge & try your hand at catching a mighty barbel or magnificent chub from the wonderful river severn! conditions currently are just about perfect for this time of year, with the waterlevel indicating 0.45 metres above normal summer level on the environment agency marker post adjacent to the museum of the gorge on the wharfage, & the river running gin clear. lower water levels throughout much of spring this year have helped the river's weedbeds develop well, providing lots of natural cover for this year's fry. on the banks it's been quite busy already, with fish showing on most stretches. gary greenwood reported a good mixed bag of dace, chub, roach & perch from dale park on floatfished maggot, & andy boniface has been in amongst the barbel using ledgered luncheon meat tactics on the wharfage itself. disappointing so far this year though has been the efforts of the various clubs who rent waters within the gorge regarding bank clearance & peg work. always a thorny subject, it seems increasingly difficult for these groups to provide anglers with the quality of facilities they are paying for when purchasing a membership or day-ticket. for those anglers who are visiting the area, there are, of course, areas which are free to fish provided the angler holds a current environment agency rod licence. in the main, these areas are located on the left bank, & run from the museum of the gorge in coalbrookdale down to the tar tunnel at coalport, with the exception of some private gardens in ironbridge town itself. this is a great stretch of the river, featuring varied types of swim, & well worth giving a try. ias river report. 8th mar 2015 as the season draws to its close on the river severn here in the ironbridge gorge, conditions remain close to ideal for this time of year. today, (sunday), the waterline on the environment agency marker post adjacent to the museum of the gorge on the wharfage is indicating 1.20 meters above normal summer level, & the river is running fairly clear with very little suspended sediment being carried within the flow. recent catch reports have been mixed, with barbel angler's particularly having to work hard for their fish. there have been some encouraging signs of silverfish though, especially along the ironbridge town waters & on the dawley angling society stretch in bower yard below benthall edge. red maggots, hemp & tares have all been producing fish, &, if conditions remain as they are, float-fishing tactics could well be the way forward from now till the last day of the river season, which is of course march 14th. ias river report. 1st mar 2015 following some rainfall this week over shropshire & mid-wales, water levels on the river severn here in the ironbridge gorge have risen somewhat. today, (sunday), the waterline on the environment agency marker post adjacent to the museum of the gorge on the wharfage is recording 2.14 metres above normal summer level. the river itself is running quite coloured, although without too much debris coming through with the flow. conditions don't favour the float at the moment, but there could well be some barbel & chub showing in the quieter margins, with ledgered worms, luncheon meat or halibut pellets probably offering the best chances of success. ias river report. 22nd feb 2015 very little change to report this week for the river severn here in the ironbridge gorge. today, (sunday), the waterline is recording 1.20 meters above normal summer level on the environment agency marker post beside the museum of the gorge on the wharfage. some colour has returned to the river though, & temperatures have dropped somewhat over the past couple of days. as expected, silverfish have been showing at many of the favourite locations up & down the gorge, & we have also had reports of pike being taken from the dawley angling society waters in bower yard below benthall edge. hopefully, this spell of settled weather will remain with us untill 14th march, & we can look forward to some decent fishing conditions for the tail-end of this river season! ias river report. 15th feb 2015 dry weather for much of the past week has helped keep conditions on the river severn here in the ironbridge gorge much as they were last weekend. some rain on friday has brought waterlevels up slightly, but today, (sunday), the waterline on the environment agency marker post beside the museum of the gorge on the wharfage is still only indicating 0.90 meters above normal summer level. the river is running quite clear, with little or no suspended sediment being carried along within the flow. rain is forecast for the coming week, but conditions over the next couple of days should remain ideal for this time of year. hopefully anglers will find some silver fish showing, & conditions are also perfect at the moment for a crack at the excellent pike fishing to be had here in the gorge, especially in dale park & on the ironbridge town stretch itself. would all anglers please be aware that some work is being carried out on the traditionally prolific dawley angling society pegs just upstrem from the ironbridge under benthall edge, so these spots unfortunately out-of-bounds at the moment. ias river report. 8th feb 2015 following
